What Is a Chiropractic Adjustment and What Does it Do?
The most common therapeutic procedure performed by Doctors of Chiropractic is known as “spinal manipulation,” also called “chiropractic adjustment.” The purpose of manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become hypomobile – or restricted in their movement – as a result of a tissue injury. Tissue injury can be caused by a single traumatic event, such as improper lifting of a heavy object, or through repetitive stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time. In either case, injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for the sufferer. Manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and allowing tissues to heal.
Doctors of Chiropractic frequently treat individuals with neuromusculoskeletal complaints, such as headaches, joint pain, neck pain, low back pain and sciatica. Chiropractors also treat patients with osteoarthritis, spinal disc conditions, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, sprains, and strains. However, the scope of conditions that Doctors of Chiropractic manage or provide care for is not limited to neuromusculoskeletal disorders. Chiropractors have the training to treat a variety of non-neuromusculoskeletal conditions such as: allergies, asthma, digestive disorders, otitis media (non-supportive) and other disorders as new research is developed.
We are often asked...
Do adjustments hurt?
The answer is….. NO! Chiropractic manipulation is a highly controlled procedure to meet the specific needs of each patient. Patients often note positive changes in their symptoms immediately following treatment.
What type of pain do chiropractors treat?
When one or more vertebrae lose their normal position due to your daily activities, they interfere with the nerves they were meant to protect. This misalignment of the vertebrae and pinching of the nerves is called a subluxation. Disease enter the picture when subluxations – nerve interference – caused by our everyday activities – chokes off the communication that keep the body operating at 100% and prevents natural healing. Some of these health problems include:
- Headache, pain at the base of the skull, pain or numbness of the face, stiffness or loss of normal movement of the neck, neck pain, shoulder, arm and hand problems including pain, numbness and loss of strength and nerve related problems involving eyes, ears, nose and throat.
- Tension between the shoulders, mid-back pain, pain wrapping around rib cage, problems affecting the heart, lungs, stomach, gall bladder, and other digestive organs.
- Low back pain, pain in the legs, disc problems, hip pain, groin pain, lower abdominal pain, bladder and bowel problems, many different reproductive problems, and circulation problems in the lower body.
- Pain at the base of the spine, bladder and bowel problems, hip pain, and sacroiliac pain.
Why do adjustments sometimes make a popping sound?
During the adjustment, the spinal joints are separated very slightly, causing a drop in pressure in the synovia fluid between joints, the release of a gas bubble, and the signature “POP” sound.
Are adjustments safe?
The answer is….. YES! Chiropractic is NATURAL! The body naturally heals itself through a system – a central nervous system. The body knows what it needs to be healthy. When there is no nerve interference, the body can better diagnose itself and heal itself through this nervous system.
Why does it take more than one appointment?
Your spine has been misaligned for so long that it actually considers THAT to be normal. We are going to have to retrain the spine. We will continue to adjust until we have your spine retrained and stabilized into a proper alignment.
Why do I need wellness care?
We are going to provide treatments that will counteract your future wear and tear. Prevention is always wiser than overhaul. Wellness care is always better than sickness care.
