Decompression

NON-SURGICAL SPINAL DECOMPRESSION EXPLAINED

Lumbar decompression relieves the pressure that builds up on the discs and nerves. The task of relieving pain comes about as a result of drawing areas of herniated disc back into place. Decompression achieves this by creating negative pressure within the disc, referred to as negative intra-discal pressure. This essentially creates a vacuum to draw the bulging and herniated disc material back into the disc space and relieves pressure. As the ligaments that hold the disc material in place become stretched or torn due to bulging and herniation, decompression strengthens the ligament bands that hold the disc material in place so healing can occur and future recurrence can be prevented.

In most cases the healing process requires only a few weeks of treatment on an out-patient basis. We have committed to undergo expert training in the delivery of decompression and dedicate a large portion of our practice to the relief of severe and chronic low-back pain. Patients come to us to return to a normal, pain-free life.

HOW DOES NON-SURGICAL SPINAL DECOMPRESSION DIFFER FROM ORDINARY SPINAL TRACTION?

Traction cannot address the source of the problem. Spinal Decompression creates a negative pressure or a vacuum inside of the disc. As a result, this causes the disc to pull in the herniation and the increase in negative pressure also causes the blood flow and nutrients to enter the disc, allowing the body’s natural fibroblastic response to heal the injury and rehydrate the disc.

WHAT TYPES OF CONDITIONS ARE TREATED WITH NON-SURGICAL SPINAL DECOMPRESSION:

  • Lumbar (low back) disc herniation
  • Sciatica
  • Spinal Stenosis
  • Advanced Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Chronic low back pain that has been unresponsive to other treatments

DO I NEED AN MRI TO BE A CANDIDATE FOR NON-SURGICAL SPINAL DECOMPRESSION:

A recent MRI is required to qualify for this procedure. A MRI provides us with information which can be obtained only through some form of higher imaging. This will allow us to tailor a proper treatment plan to your condition.

HOW DO I GO ABOUT OBTAINING A MRI?

We can refer you to a local imaging facility for your MRI.

WHY NON-SURGICAL SPINAL DECOMPRESSION VS SURGICAL?

Non-surgical spinal decompression offers benefits that include:

    • No anesthesia
    • No incision
    • No recovery time from work or your life
    • Offers relief and correction
    Back pain in woman

DO I QUALIFY FOR NON-SURGICAL SPINAL DECOMPRESSION?

Any of the following make you a good candidate for Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression:

    • Pain due to a herniated or bulging lumbar disc that is more than four weeks old
    • Recurrent pain from a failed back surgery that is more than six months old
    • Persistent pain from a degenerated disc not responding to four weeks of treatment

    Disqualifications for Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression:

    • Pregnancy
    • Metastatic cancer
    • Severe osteoporosis
    • Recent compression fracture in the lumbar spine
    • Pathologic aortic aneurysm
    • Pelvic or abdominal cancer
    • Disc infections
    • Hemiplegia, paraplegia, or cognitive dysfunction
